Benefits of Training
We recently devised a model for farming which we believe would mobilise African youth into farming, help reduce youth unemployment and reoffending, help improve food provision and reduce poverty. It will also help the African youth realise that they do not have to leave their country to create wealth and could also let Africans in the diaspora realise how they can create wealth back home through farming.
Background
For many young Africans, the dream often seems to lie beyond their homeland. They look to the West hoping to find greener pastures but there are vast opportunities right there in Africa especially in farming. Shockingly, many young people do not see farming as a viable career. They would rather become online influencers or dabble in forex and crypto trading or simply leave the country. Some of the elderly who are into farming are not educated enough to know how to grow a farm as a business. The youth who are interested in farming do not have the resources to cultivate and grow a farm as a business. Whereas there is so much money to be made in farming especially in Nigeria with a population of over 200 million people.
Farming Model
We implemented a farming model about 10 months ago and now have 3 thriving farms in Nigeria employing 20 young, enthusiastic farmers. We have been able to cultivate about 50 acres of land with crops like maize, cassava, castor, sweet potatoes, cashew, plantain and vegetables. We run this farm from the UK by employing youth with the relevant technical skills in Nigeria.
We now want to extend the farming model to other Nigerian youth through a training academy that will train, support and finance them in setting up their own farming business. In the third year of operation, with good business practices, a farm business owner could be turning over at least £15k per annum, by current Nigerian standard, that farmer is a millionaire.
Set Up Cost & Farmer's Prospect
The academy will cost £46,000 to set up. It will employ 20 young agriculturists and farm workers. It will set up at least 10 new young farm owners in its first year. Whilst the academy is a non-profit organisation, it will be generating about £15,000 per annum whilst paying out £10,000 per annum as investment capital for the young farmers it helps sets up a business. The remaining £5k generated will go on academy maintenance. Essentially, the academy would generate enough income to sustain itself.
