As a survivor of domestic abuse, my journey has been one of reclaiming identity, rebuilding voice, and transforming pain into purpose through art. Trauma taught me the urgent need for understanding, connection, and healing—a need I now pour into my practice. Through painting, performance, and community engagement, I create work that speaks to the invisible experiences so many carry. I aim to educate about the complexities of abuse, empower survivors to feel seen and validated, and hold space where healing can begin.
As a working-class artist, I’ve faced significant financial barriers. I’ve juggled multiple jobs while building a socially engaged practice rooted in storytelling, folklore, and lived experience. Now, I’ve been offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study MA Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, one of the most prestigious art schools in the world.
This next step will allow me to deepen my practice, reach wider audiences, and strengthen my ability to use art as a force for healing, empowerment, and social change. But I can’t do it alone.
I’m raising funds to help cover tuition, living costs, and materials so I can accept my place at the Slade and continue to grow as both an artist and advocate. Your support—whether through donations, shares, or kind words—will help me take this vital step forward.
Together, we can turn stories of pain into tools for transformation.
Thank you for believing in my work and helping make this dream a reality.
With love and gratitude,
Ruby Waage Townsend
