FAMILIES AND BABIES (FAB)

RCN 1136594, Bolton

FAB supports the health and wellbeing in children and families in the UK. We run breastfeeding groups that support new mums and families to help them bond with their baby. Breastfeeding is really beneficial, including improved infant and maternal health, and vital relationship-building for improved mental health. We want to create safe and supportive environments where new mums feel empowered and enabled to breastfeed. But no-one is turned away if they aren’t breastfeeding – FAB staff and volunteers can give advice on any area of infant feeding, working with grandparents, dads, carers etc, as well as with mothers.

FAMILIES AND BABIES (FAB)

While breastfeeding is natural it doesn’t always come naturally. Research shows that support in the early days can make a huge difference to a woman’s breastfeeding experience. How to feed your baby is one of the most important decisions when preparing for the birth of your baby, and FAB works to make sure that you are able to make an informed choice and feel supported when choosing to breastfeed.

We are raising money to train 50 Peer Supporters throughout the country. Peer Supporters run local support groups and also help new mums on a one-to-one basis with infant feeding.

Our face-to-face groups are a safe space for mums/families to not only access breastfeeding support but to socialise too. Our groups are inclusive to all aspects of a family’s breastfeeding journey from start to finish, whether they are feeding a 2 week old or a 2 year old, if they’re combi-feeding, exclusively pumping or exclusively breastfeeding. All are welcome!

In some areas, FAB hosts virtual breastfeeding groups via Facebook Rooms. There can be many reasons people may not be able to visit a face-to-face group, so Rooms is a great way for new mums to still access support and socialise.

It costs us £335 to train one Peer Supporter, who could go on to support 50 families every year.
