Enable Ability

RCN 276422, Portsmouth

To provide care, welfare, interest and advancement of disabled people and their families and carers in the locality. Enable Ability has the general aims of contributing to the quality of life of disabled people and through Landport Community Centre we provide a weekly Larder Scheme for local residents in and around the Landport area, one of the most deprived wards in the UK, as well as a subsidised cafe and warm space, where the local community can gain work experience or meet in a safe space.

Enable Ability

At Enable-Ability we support families , friends and carers who work in the disability sector. Our mission is simple: through the provision of services, that offer care, friendship, stimulation and motivation, to help disabled people achieve their full potential – whilst giving families and carers much-needed respite. We serve disabled people in the Portsmouth and south-east Hampshire areas with a range of different services that have been carefully designed based on user needs.

We are based at Landport Community Centre in Portsmouth and now provide many services for the immediate community and surrounding area, creating projects as to the needs of the community.  It was here that we set up a much needed community larder.

We desperately need your help!

At the Landport Community Centre we provide a weekly Larder Scheme to support the food insecurities in this area, but the shelves are starting to become bare, we need urgent funds so we can sustain the current need.

The area of Landport is within one of the most deprived wards in the UK!  The current cost-of-living crisis has hit this area really badly, so we offer a weekly Larder Scheme on a Tuesday to support anyone in this community, often also providing wellbeing events where access to fuel saving advice and debt support is offered.

The Larder scheme opens every Tuesday morning, and offers:

Members can buy 10 items for just £3.50, after joining for £1, where they can choose items that would be equivalent at the supermarket to cost around £20, this massively help families budget and feed their households with a nutritious meal.

Offering a mixture of cupboard staples, tinned and fresh goods, we also aim to offer a good selection of frozen and chilled produce, most items supplied by Fare Share and purchased from the local supermarkets.

Demand is currently reducing the amount of people we can support -

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are more than a Larder Scheme - one visitor, Julie, first  attended the larder  back in February after hearing about the service from a friend, as a full-time carer for her son with specific needs she was struggling on a tight budget, being able to choose food at an affordable price massively helped.  Julie said she couldn't believe how friendly everyone was, as she was paying towards her shop she also didn't feel awkward in attending every week.  Her son is on the autistic spectrum so was encouraged to attend the centre's job club, it was then that she offered to volunteer at the larder too.  This has made a massive difference to her confidence as she had felt very isolated, and missed adult company.

This larder exists to help remove the difficult choice between heating or eating, the choice families face between feeding their child or paying a utility bill, feeding their children or eating a decent meal themselves. Benefiting any resident of Portsmouth, ensuring that they are supported   through the cost-of-living crisis and beyond.  This larder is a friendly space where regular cost of living and health services meet to support local Portsmouth people.

PLEASE make a massive difference to Portsmouth by giving generously to this Larder at Landport Community Centre!

Additional funds will enable us to support many more Portsmouth residents, ensuring young or old receive the food to make a warm meal. The difference to one of of older residents who commented at a recent wellbeing event that she couldn't take some of the fresh veg to roast as "she hadn't used her oven in years - as couldn't afford to use it".  Help us help more residents like her find other cooking solutions to cook at warm, nutritious, meal in these cold evenings.

Any donation, big or small will make a massive difference!
