Providing Non-Food Items for 200 households displaced by recent rock slides and flooding near Kasese, Western Uganda.

by Eric Fewster in Kasese, Uganda

After visiting Kasese in 1993 where I had visited a hospital that was treating those with HIV/AIDS, I had met a man that was dying of AIDS and promised to support his kids through school. The eldest son, Yusuf Shaban, went on to start up his own local charity and now works with the Kasese District local government. I just checked in with him after hearing about the recent rockslides and flooding that has left many displaced and with nothing (https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/may/16/people-are-desperate-floods-and-rock-slides-devastate-western-uganda). These people are sheltering in churches and schools and have lost everything.

Yusuf has already been active distributing some blankets which friends had delivered, but is trying to solicit for help to get more bought and distributed. To this end, I am setting up this crowdfunding page to raise money needed for local purchase of the following items (currency is Ugandan Shillings) which should go some way to alleviating the situation for 200 households:

500 blankets @ 12,000 USh

500 jerrycans @ 8,000 USh

500 tarpaulins @ 20,000 USh

1,000 saucepans @ 6,000 USh

Total: 26,000,000 USh or £5,600

Any questions, let me know.
