As students, we realised the major issue of overflowing student waste at halls across Sheffield, and the implications this has on our environment. Concurrently, we have also become acutely aware of the struggles residents across Sheffield face. With wage stagnation in our city and many living in precarious situations, a lot of people are finding themselves in a vulnerable position.
As such, we felt the need to do something. After months of planning, we are ready to set up an organisation that helps to tackle both the above problems, whilst also building a proactive bridge between Sheffield's local and student populations.
Our charity would operate by taking reusable waste items donated by students at halls of residence, especially in the moving-out period between May and July each year. We would, with the help of a youth/student volunteer team, take these items to a storage centre, assess the reusability of the items, and then freely redistribute them to vulnerable residents across Sheffield. We would set up stalls and work with other local organisations to build a positive network across the Sheffield City Region.
