Aim: We are fundraising for storage racking, which needs to be custom built. Can you help us get to £1000?

Built by her!

Following building works Pia gave away her old laminate and found out social/ council housing tends to be issued to new tenants with bare floors! She heard families stayed without flooring, in excess of a year after moving in.

Pia runs a business as a beautician. But she saw people in need and took action by starting not-for-profit “No Floor No More” in 2022. It saves carpet and lino from going to landfill to be re-used in homes. This benefits people who would otherwise struggle to afford flooring and those wishing to make more sustainable lifestyle choices.

Racking makes choosing and retrieving flooring a lot more accessible. It saves labour and backs and people can see the materials much easier! The photo at the top shows one of our storage spaces. The picture below shows the challenge we have....

We know families who have been living with bare cement floors for years!!

“No Floor No More” was set up to support these families and reduce waste. We rescue flooring from filmsets, festivals, events, exhibitions and end of line from carpet shops & fitters, samples and pre owned from individuals. Materials are saved from going to landfill or incineration and re-used in homes at affordable prices.

What makes your project unique?

The company is ‘filling the void’ of a massive problem and supports the right to adequate living Standard (article 25 -Universal Declaration of Human Rights). It has revolutionised access to flooring for low-income households and tenants in the area.

NFNM now also stocks some white goods, furniture and clothes as many of the customers are housed in emergency situations. The recycled materials are offered at two affordable prices, with a lower rate for those receiving income support. A furnished house plays a vital role in (mental) health and well-being!

Flooring should not be a luxury!

Thousands of households are living with bare floor boards or concrete. The cost of furniture, white goods and increased cost of living means tenants are often unable to fund flooring.

According to research, around 1.2 million people live without flooring in the UK, 61% of whom live in social housing.

Living in a house without flooring isn’t homely and can affect people’s health. Children crawling or playing on a concrete living room floor is not suitable. Some families have put down cardboard boxes to try and keep the heat in and keep their children as safe as possible.

Win-Win situation for people and the environment.

Waste is reduced as beautiful flooring, only briefly used at events for example, is saved and reused to help families on low incomes achieve a decent standard of living (not cement floors or bare floorboards!), better mental health and safer homes for children learn to crawl, walk and play.

No Floor No More combines sustainability with community action.

 What impact have you made?

We have grown a lot and in the last two years 1600 people have found their way to us! We now also stock furniture, white goods and items that help those that start with very little, like emergency clothing and toys for people fleeing domestic violence.

When did you start working on your project?

In 2022 Pia started a petition advocating for a reduction in waste (and cost) for Local Authorities which simultaneously improves access to flooring for council house tenants “Keep or Clear. Allow new tenants to choose bare floors or previous flooring- Reduce waste”. https://chng.it/FW7MZt99FQ

Pia founded Community Interest Company “No Floor No More” in 2022. It has become a regular recycling point for flooring used for a short time, at events and in the TV/ film/entertainment industry.

What milestones have you achieved already?

To date NFNM has helped over 1600 families. “Before and after” photographs can be seen on https://www.nofloornomore.org/. Members of the Facebook group “St Albans Carpets & Flooring Reuse” post before and after photographs are heart-warming to see and help to show other members to see how great a room can look for little cost.
