An update from our CEO

This is a brief update from our CEO on the situation regarding Afghan refugees arriving in Fife as a result of the humanitarian crisis in their home country:

I have read some negative and disappointing stories about experiences of some of the families in the UK media which are very concerning.  Whilst I cannot be sure about what exactly is or isn’t happening elsewhere in the UK, I do know what is happening here in Fife.

The families arriving in Fife are receiving great support from a range of partner agencies in Fife, including Fife Council, Fife Health and Social Care Partnership, NHS Fife and Fife Voluntary Action.  Support has also been provided from national agencies too.  Access to interpreters has been excellent and people with health conditions are receiving the support that you and I would expect from our health and social care services.

Thanks to the generosity of Fifers, we have been able to provide clothes, toys, books, toiletries and other essential items swiftly.  Your donations have made a direct and huge difference – thank you.

Whilst I cannot begin to imagine some of the hardships that these families have endured, I have seen – first-hand – relaxed, smiling faces. I have spoken to grateful and relieved adults and children.  Grateful for the warm welcome and support they have received from the minute they arrive in Fife.  I do not see the kind of issues being reported elsewhere in the UK.

In all that we do here at FVA, we try hard to treat others as we would want to be treated ourselves.  I know that everybody in Fife would support that.  I am proud of the welcome we’ve extended and the support we are providing here in Fife.
