The Poole Dolphins American Football Team was created in January 2018.
At the time there was no youth American Football programs in the Bournemouth and Poole area. The nearest youth programme was in Southampton. This club was created to establish a community American Football team that will include Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding areas.
The club's focus initially was for young people aged between 13-16; to get them active playing a sport that they may not necessarily know. It allows young people to express themselves and learn from the same base point as everyone else; being able to play and learn to achieve their potential.
The objective of the club is to make a difference in Bournemouth and Poole through youth American Football. We have created flyers and are using social media to aid in are targeting 13-16 year olds to help increase visibility of the club. The sport is very diverse and there are positions for young people who may not necessarily be active themselves, but are looking to try something new. American Football does not discriminate someone, but embraces it with skill positions that focus on everyone no matter their background.
We are committed to the longevity of the club. We currently have a single team that is U16’s. They competed in our first season in 2019 winning 3 of the 12 games they played. We had a total of 16 different people train and play for us from Sept 2018 through to August 2019.
We were aiming to build on this success in 2020 before COVID-19 halted and then cancelled the season as a whole.
We continued to grow through the summer even though we were not trainig having a total of thirty-one 13-16 years olds interested or actively a part of the club going into the winter this year (2020).
We are looking ahead to 2021 and beyond right now and are hoping to create an U19's team. This team will be the next step for players who are exiting the U16 bracket and looking to continue playing as well as targeting 17-19 year olds in the community who want to try a new sport.
