How best to celebrate the transition from LGBTQ+ Pride to Disability Pride Month than to throw a big, gay, accessible prom?
We know that Pride events aren't always accessible and inclusive. We also know that for so many in our community, school events weren't great. Maybe they weren't accessible, maybe we weren't out yet, maybe we were bullied just for being ourselves.
So, we thought, why not change the narrative? And queer, disabled prom was born!
Bring your mates, dates and chosen families along and dance to all the old school classics (and Chappell, of course). Enjoy some performances (announcements coming soon!), try out karaoke from our brill collaborator Dykes On Mics, and, of course, dress up for the chance to be named our (gender neutral!) prom queen.
And we're asking for your help to make it happen. We're just two queer pals with a plan and this all costs money, while getting financial support for disabled-led projects is really hard, so any donation large or small will help make this the most accessible event it can be!
In particular, donations will go towards:
- Covering the costs of a fully accessible venue with multiple disabled loos (woo) and a quiet room
- Getting in some tasty snacks and drinks for all diets
- Fun prizes
- Performances
- Paying ourselves!
Disabled queer prom is brought to you by Every Body Queer, an events and community initiative for disabled LGBTQ+ people. Our events centre people who live at this intersection, although allies in the wider queer community are always welcome.
This event is really needed - disabled queer people deserve to celebrate Pride - and we want to make it the best it can be. Thank you for any help you can give; it means the world to us.
Queer love forever,
Lucy and Kim x
