Disability Sport Yorkshire

RCN 1145525, Wakefield

Disability Sport Yorkshire is a charity dedicated to promoting inclusive sports and physical activity for disabled people across Yorkshire. Through events, training, and advocacy, it empowers individuals, develops future leaders, and collaborates with partners to create accessible opportunities, ensuring everyone can participate and thrive in sport.

In Yorkshire, many disabled individuals face significant barriers to physical activity and economic participation. According to the Activity Alliance's Annual Disability and Activity Survey, disabled people are less than half as likely to see 'people like them' playing, working, and volunteering in sport and physical activity.

This lack of representation can lead to feelings of isolation and discourage engagement in both sports and the workforce.

Financial constraints further exacerbate these challenges. The same survey highlights a clear spending gap, with disabled people spending an average of £13.40 less per month on physical activity compared to non-disabled people. Despite this, a higher percentage of disabled individuals (34%) express a desire to spend more on being active than non-disabled individuals (27%). However, concerns about potential reductions in benefits or financial assistance deter many from increasing their activity levels.

Disability Sport Yorkshire (DSY) plays a crucial role in addressing these disparities across the region. By promoting and delivering physical activity for disabled children and adults, DSY works in partnership with a range of leisure and sports providers to offer participants the opportunity to improve their health and well-being, ensuring the best possible experience.

Through events, training, and advocacy, DSY empowers individuals, fosters inclusivity, and collaborates with partners to create accessible opportunities, ensuring everyone can participate and thrive in sport.

Through these efforts, DSY not only enhances physical health but also develops social connections and economic empowerment, enriching communities throughout Yorkshire.
