Aim: dew-mist-cloud-fog is photographic intervention celebrating the Dew Pond.

dew-mist-cloud-fog is photographic intervention celebrating the Dew Pond. Dew ponds are a mystical and ecologically significant feature of the South Downs National Park. In spring/summer 2025 three photographic artists, Emma Lindsay, Alison Bettles and Angus Carlyle will create large scale prints of the ponds to be installed in pedestrianised areas in Newhaven. The project is delivered by Ancient//Flippant collective- a shifting group of local artists who share a common interest in landscape, folklore, conservation and archaeology.

Over the last two years, SDNP, Froglife and The National Trust’s Changing Chalk initiative have worked to fundraise for and restore a number of the local dew ponds, many of which have fallen into ecological disrepair. The artists involved in this project each work with alternative photographic process, have a fondness for Dew Ponds and wish to not only support their protection, but help build connections between Sussex’s urban areas and the surrounding sites of natural beauty.

In the summer of 2025 (exact dates tbc) the artists will create 6 large-scale photographic reproductions of the ponds to be installed on the floor of pedestrianised areas around the town. Each ‘pond’ will be pasted on to the floor and accompanied by a unique underwater audio recording. It is the artists hope that these interventions will provide a glimpse, or a portal, to these unique but often remotely located sites, particularly for residents who may have limited access to the surrounding South Downs.

We have successfully received funding from Creative Newhaven's BN9 Creative Growth Fund to make the project happen but we still need to raise a minimum of £300 to ensure the project is of the highest quality it can be and that it reaches as many people as possible. Any support would be extremely gratefully received so that we can best celebrate the magical and ecologically important Dew Pond.
