UPDATE!

Annie and Basil have now been joined by the rest of their new clan! They seem to have settled in well, as this gorgeous pic from Secret World shows:

They were quite nervous when they first moved in with their new family!

The story of Annie and Basil.

These two cubs were found days apart, fairly close to each other, both in very sorry states.

Annie was having seizures on a road, and Basil was hiding in daylight beneath a horse box, dehydrated and malnourished.

They needed expert veterinary care, then we looked after them in our homes whilst we located the sett they had come from.

We suspect, from the age of the cubs and where they were found, that they are actually siblings, and their mum had left the main sett to have them, then something had happened to her. The closest sett to the cubs had signs of recent use but was empty after extensive monitoring.

Whilst we looked after them, both cubs ate well. Whilst gaining weight and regaining health, they were too young to be released where they were found.

Luckily Secret World had recently secured an additional release site and were able to take in the cubs. After negative bTB tests, our volunteers made the long journey to Somerset where Annie and Basil were welcomed, and reunited for the first time since they were found!

Rescue centres around the country have huge pressures on them at this time of year, and we did not take the decision to transfer them lightly. Other cubs in our care this year have been successfully returned to their natal setts, but this was just not possible for Annie and Basil.

Secret World are one of the country's most respected centres with a proven track record of successful rearing and release of orphaned badger cubs to safe release sites.

We would like to take some responsibility for the financial burden we are placing on Secret World. Raising the cubs, building an artificial sett, support feeding and monitoring will cost approximately £2,000 per cub.

Any help towards this would be gratefully received!

Below is Annie, being weighed on her first day in our care.  Three weeks later she weighed 3.5kg on admission to Secret World!1722184300_1000041065.jpg

We would like to thank all of our supporters in advance for your continued support.. We couldn't do this without you!
