I love a challenge, but would never call myself a ‘runner’. It’s never been for me; I’ve done small stints whilst training for other events but I have barely ever run more than 5km at a time. When chatting to my Mum a month ago she mentioned that we still had a space going for this years ‘virtual’ London Marathon (which can be run in any location on the day), so I said I’d give it a go. I’m regretting this a little already, but it’s in writing now! Most training plans would probably build running up incrementally, and I can honestly say a couple of weeks in, that I would highly recommend doing the same. Thankfully I have a good foundation of fitness to rely on, but my legs don’t hurt any less. I’ve gone from 5km, to 15km, to running 30km yesterday. It feels a way off yet, but I know I’ll do it, mainly because of the incredible charity that I aim to rapidly raise funds and awareness for. Plus it falls on my birthday, and I’m always up for spending that by doing something interesting.
As many of you know, my Mum founded and runs the non-profit charity ‘African Vision Malawi’, which is quite simply the most worthy cause I can think of. In an age where most of us are now thoroughly conscious of our environmental impact on this Earth, what better way to assist in doing our bit than by aiding those in a region of the world where climate change is most drastically affecting people’s lives. African Vision Malawi aims to assist a rural community in Malawi, sub-Saharan Africa, through vocational skills training for the most vulnerable, implementing regenerative agriculture programs, and providing better education and health care, to name just a few.
Please in any way you can, support me in this challenge, and in doing so support those who don’t have a voice. We are the privileged few in a position to make a big difference, and everything is hugely appreciated.
Love,
Sam x
