Introduction:
Bevendon Square, formerly a council-owned doctor's surgery, has been acquired to establish a vital Jewish community center on Leicester Road, Salford. This initiative addresses the pressing needs of the growing Ultra-Orthodox Jewish population, many of whom are young individuals from large, low-income families facing significant challenges. Primarily Yiddish-speaking, with English as a second language, this community experiences heightened social isolation and a critical mental health crisis, particularly among its youth.
Problem Statement:
Pre-existing social isolation, exacerbated by the pandemic, is compounded by cultural stigma surrounding mental health, leading to reluctance in seeking help. Financial instability, due to rising living costs and limited employment opportunities, further contributes to emotional distress. The inability to access mainstream provisions and the lack of culturally sensitive mental health services leave vulnerable individuals without adequate care, perpetuating a cycle of despair and hindering community well-being.
Project Objectives:
This project aims to renovate Bevendon Square into a comprehensive Community Wellness Hub, providing:
- Culturally sensitive mental health support and resources.
- Safe and inclusive spaces for after-school activities and community gatherings.
- Improved energy efficiency and sustainability of the building.
Renovation Plan:
The renovation will focus on essential upgrades and energy efficiency improvements:
- Heating System Upgrade: Installation of a modern, efficient boiler to ensure adequate heating and reduce energy consumption.
- Interior Refurbishment: Comprehensive plastering and painting to create a welcoming and functional space.
- Energy Efficiency Upgrades:
- Enhanced wall and floor insulation to minimize heat loss.
- Replacement of existing windows and doors with high-efficiency, double or triple-glazed units.
- Installation of fire and safety compliant internal doors.
- Implementation of energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the building.
- Installation of smart heating systems with programmable thermostats and zoned controls.
Rationale:
Upgrading Bevendon Square will create a safe, welcoming, and energy-efficient community hub that directly addresses the mental health and social needs of the local Ultra-Orthodox Jewish population. By improving the building's infrastructure, we will provide a sustainable and supportive environment for community activities, mental health support, and social interaction. This project aligns with Salford's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2038, contributing to a greener and more resilient community.
Expected Outcomes:
- Improved mental health and well-being among community members.
- Reduced social isolation and increased community cohesion.
- Enhanced energy efficiency and reduced carbon footprint of the building.
- Creation of a sustainable and accessible community space.
Where Your Funding Will Go - Tackling Poverty, Inequality, and Climate Change:
The £30,000 fundraiser will address key priorities:
- Tackling Poverty and Inequality:
By creating a culturally sensitive space, we are breaking down barriers to access vital mental health support and community resources. This hub will act as a lifeline for low-income families, providing a safe and inclusive environment for youth to engage in after-school activities, reducing social isolation and fostering a sense of belonging. - Creating Places Where People Want to Live:
The renovated Bevendon Square will be a welcoming and functional hub, creating a sense of community and pride. By improving the building's infrastructure, we will provide a space where individuals feel supported and connected, enhancing their overall quality of life. - Responding to Climate Change:
A significant portion of the funding will be dedicated to energy efficiency upgrades, including a new boiler, double/triple-glazed windows, LED lighting, and smart heating systems. These investments will significantly reduce the building's carbon footprint, directly contributing to Salford’s 2038 carbon-neutral target. This demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development, ensuring a healthier environment for current and future generations.
By investing in Bevendon Square, you are not just renovating a building; you are investing in the future of a community, tackling inequality, enhancing lives, and contributing to a sustainable Salford.
