Help bring Cleanse The Streets to life, a powerful thriller created by Arab women that explores themes of honor, justice, and sisterhood.

by Nicole Atalla in London, England, United Kingdom

Cleanse The Streets is a fast-paced, dark thriller about two sisters on the run, forced to make an impossible choice in a broken system. This film explores the fear, stigma, and injustice surrounding honor crimes, all through the lens of young Arab women.

Proudly led by an all-female creative team, the director Aysha Shahaltough, producer Rahmeh Deeb, and DoP Nicole Atalla, three young Jordanian women. This project is supported by Netflix x AFAC’s Women in Film program. Your support will help bring this urgent and powerful story to life, amplifying Arab women’s voices in cinema.

Director's statement:

How can a rape not be the worst thing to ever happen to you? How can the fear of someone finding out be scarier than the daunting incident itself? It’s when murder is glorified and justified.  When your blood is entitled to spill yours in the name of honor. It’s when the societal monster shapeshifts into your father. It’s each time we understand a cold-blooded murder and allow ourselves to call it an “honor crime.

It’s yesterday, today, and tomorrow, it’s every day we get to wonder what's worse; to be raped or to be scared to get killed because of it? And we want you to remember that being able to only wonder is a point of privilege when it comes to the world we live in. It’s something we shouldn’t find comfort in, it’s a point that allows us to fight the prevailing opinion, that cursed us from the beginning. Man or woman, we are both victims of this system.
