I am raising money for The Literacy Hubs in Portsmouth by walking 5 kilometres per day for 5 days per week over a 5 week period with our Torbs!

Did you know?

  • Nearly a quarter of all children in Portsmouth are currently living in poverty
  • In The Charles Dickens ward 44.2% of children live in poverty
  • Children living in poverty tend to start school with vocabularies up to 19 months behind their better-off peers and are twice as likely to leave secondary school without good GCSEs in English and maths.
  • 1 in 3 children, from lower socio-economic backgrounds, leave primary school without reaching expected levels of reading.

The Literacy Hubs helps communities across Portsmouth gain the literacy skills they need to thrive.

Their first hub: The Pompey Pirates, launched in September 2020 when they welcomed 60 children (young pirates) aboard the ship! At The Pompey Pirates they offer a unique, creative and adventurous learning environment which inspires young people from the least advantaged communities, across Portsmouth, to improve their literacy skills and fall in love with reading and writing.

2020 was a tough year in which to launch a charity!  School closures during the COVID-19 crisis meant their work is even more crucial, as the literacy gap between those less advantaged children and their peers has become even wider. They have seen first hand the impact this year has had on our children's education and well being. They want to support even more children, who have been affected by the pandemic, with access to their programme. Your donation will help address educational inequality and ensure that the children we support can succeed at school and beyond.  As a small charity, every single donation will make a difference to supporting young people in Portsmouth.

Any support is central to their programme, and ensures they can work with as many young people as possible.

- £20 pays for three brand new books for their lending library

-£50 pays for a week of healthy snacks and fruit for hungry pirates attending their sessions

-£166 pays for a term of funding for one pupil

-£500 pays for one year of funding for one pupil

-£2,500 pays for five pupils for a full year of the programme

Anything you can contribute towards helping me achieve my target will be massively appreciated.

Thank you for your support!

Lots of love, Clare & Torben <3
