Circa

A new play by Tom Ratcliffe. Directed by Joe Allan

Fresh from a world première at the Theater de Meervaart, Amsterdam, earlier this year, Circa comes to London and The Vaults for it's UK première this June as part of Pride in London Festival. Presented alongside Pride in the 21st Century Art and Photography Exhibtion.

But to get there, we need your help.

A History of the project

The play has been developed through Rikki Beadle-Blair and John Russell Gordon at Team Angelica through a series of table reads from early 2015. Circa  first appeared in London last November in a sold-out development research and development showing at The Old Red Lion Theatre before transferring to the beautiful Theatre de Meervaart, Amsterdam for its world premiere as part of ‘Festival Contact’ in January this year.

The Play

"That’s what everyone says isn't it? Gay men shag everything. Disease and all that.

My mum, when I came out, the first thing she said to me was ‘don’t get AIDS'...But things are different now. They’ll be different for us."

The twenty-first century. Homosexuality is now more integrated than ever. Marriage is legal, parenthood is possible and 'homophobics' are now the one's shunned from society. The time has arrived to replace promiscuity with ever-lasting companionship: but is it really that simple?

Circa follows the story of a man’s navigation through romantic life, exploring the dangers of expectation and how relationships can shape you into a person you never expected to become.

 work.Theatre

work.Theatre is a new, internationally produced, theatre company from the UK specialising in new writing. Initially founded in 2012 and re-launched in late 2015, work.Theatre's first full-length production 'Circa' premièred at the Theater de Meervaart, Amsterdam in January 2016 as part of Festival Contact. This was transferred over after a sell-out development showing at the Old Red Lion Theatre, Islington in November 2015. Our aim is to produce emotionally provocative and complex plays, relevant to today's society, at the highest quality.

What do we need?

So far we have raised a total of £11,500  for the project with a target of £12,500. We're really proud as a new company to be raising this kind of money to be able to pay all the creatives involved and bring an ambitious, creative text to life. A total of 14 artists/creatives will be working on the project (including the artists in our exciting Art and Photography exhibition running alongside the play).

The Vaults is a huge and wonderful space and we are very excited to be filling it with this multi-disciplinary event for Pride in London Festival.
