Hello, I’m Dr. Saagarika Sharma, an overseas-qualified dentist and a self-funded PhD researcher at the University of Portsmouth. My research is driven by a simple yet powerful question: Can something as routine as using mouthwash impact your heart health?
My project explores how different concentrations of chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash affect the oral microbiome and vascular (heart and blood vessel) function, by disrupting the nitric oxide pathway (important for systemic functions). We’re looking at both healthy individuals and those with periodontal disease to understand who may be most at risk.
I’m incredibly fortunate to work under the guidance of a team of experts in dentistry and cardiovascular science. My supervisors include Professor Chris Louca, a leading academic in dental education and clinical practice; Dr. Mahdi Mutahar, who brings deep research insight; and Dr. Ant Shepherd, whose experience bridges oral health and systemic disease. I also collaborate with the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science to ensure cardiovascular assessments are cutting-edge and accurate.
As a self-funded international student, I’m raising money to cover lab costs, participant recruitment, essential supplies, and living expenses. Your support will help me complete this vital research and share findings that could influence global health advice.
Let’s shape a healthier future together.
