Aim: Set in the backdrop of early 90s Eastern Europe, Inertia is an ode to womanhood and to life beyond the fractures of grief, trauma and abuse.

About Inertia

Inspired by the life fragments and memories of the playwrights’ Lithuanian grandmother, INERTIA is a one-act piece of new writing presenting a haunting portrait of grief and self-reclamation. Set in the backdrop of early 90s Eastern Europe post the fall of the Soviet Union, INERTIA unearths generational trauma, resilience and the silent forces of a Soviet Union hangover. Through brutalist realism and dreamlike sequences, it explores the fate of Frida, a woman bound by the weight of an abusive past, as she navigates the fractures of love, motherhood and survival.

About Ragana productions

We're an emerging early career collective focused on inclusivity, support and representation for Eastern European communities and beyond. We aim to break through the saturated climate of status-quo storytelling and provide a challenging, experimental space for audiences and creatives to tell stories outside the UK demographic.

Why is this play important today?

In a climate saturated with stories of the status-quo, we are passionate about exploring an under-represented cultural demographic here in Fringe 2025. After a successful run in Glasgow in March, we are eager to expand the play's audience further and bring it to the Fringe, with the hope of fostering inclusivity, representation and support for the Eastern European community and beyond, especially since the war in Ukraine has entered its third year.

INERTIA is an original play inspired directly by the playwright’s Lithuanian grandmother and her life under the Soviet thumb, inspiring audiences with a raw representation of survival, as well as grounding the project deeply in its Lithuanian ancestry.
