  • On the 26th on January I will be running Chepstow Half Marathon and would like to raise £500 for a charity who's work I believe to be critical in the fight to end domestic abuse towards women and children in the UK.

But how bad is domestic abuse in the UK?

These startling facts highlight quite how rife this issue is in our society:

• The police receive a domestic abuse-related call every 30 seconds. Yet it is estimated that less than 24% of domestic abuse crime is reported to the police.

• 1 in 4 women in England and Wales will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime.

• On average, one woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex every five days in England and Wales.

• It is estimated that around 3 women a week die by suicide as a result of domestic abuse.

• 20% of children in the UK have lived with an adult perpetrating domestic abuse. That’s 1 in 5 kids.

• Domestic abuse gets worse during pregnancy. About 20% of women in Refuge’s services are pregnant or have recently given birth.

• 41% of UK girls aged 14 to 17 in an intimate relationship experienced some form of sexual violence from their partner.

• 93% of defendants in domestic abuse cases are male; 84% of victims are female. And yet, women are three times more likely to be arrested for incidents of abuse.

• Domestic abuse costs the UK an estimated £23 billion a year.

Why Women's Aid?

Women's Aid not only offers support to women and children who are survivors of domestic abuse, but they also influence government policy, conduct research into key areas of the topic to bring about social change, as well as being the leading training provider, offering training to professional such as Solicitors, Magistrates, Police and Judges.

Womens Aid's sucessful campaign work has previously resulted in:

• Coercive Control and Controlling Behaviour being made a criminal offence - 2015

• Survivors of domestic abuse being able to register to vote without their name and address appearing on the electoral roll and without the fear of their former partners finding their address, thus giving thousands of women who live in refuge the ability to vote. - 2018

• Relationships and Sex Education being made a mandatory part of the education curriculum - 2020

It would mean a great deal to me if you could support my cause by donating to my fundraiser or sharing the link on social media. Every single one of us has friends and family that have been impacted by domestic abuse - your donation will both saves and improve lives!

Donation impact guide:

£50 - could enable Women's Aid to have 5 life-saving conversations with survivors via our Live Chat.

£90 - could ensure a woman struggling to escape abuse is given ongoing support by one of our expert caseworkers to find safety.

£450 - could help train professionals, from the police to the judiciary, to improve their response to domestic abuse.

Thank you!
