Charles Young Centre

We are The Charles Young Centre, based in Talbot Road, South Shields. We were opened in 1982 by the then Local Mayor and local athlete Steve Cram. We are a registered charity (no. 508814). We have a committee of 6, 5 Trustees, 5 volunteers and a paid workforce of 5. We are not related, in any way, to any other organisation.

The core function of the charity is to provide facilities for the elderly and disabled, giving them a daily healthy meal, social inclusion with others and enable them to leave the confines of their home. We pick them up from their homes, bring them to the centre, where they are given a three course meal, provided with a light exercise class and generally entertained, before taking them home. We cover the entire South Tyneside area. The Centre also takes referrals from Social services, Help the Aged and  the local CVS.  The Centre caters for over 90 members a week. They are also taken once a month on a shopping trip and weekly on a day trip out.

We own 4 minibuses to transport our users to and from their homes and for the day trips.

The Centre, mainly for the elderly, is also home to the U3A based in South Shields which is predominantly made up of over 65's but they are the more active group, with sessions in table tennis, whist, drama and singing.

To subsidise our core facilities the centre is used by a good number of other organisations which include the South Shields Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and is hired out daily for functions, keep fit classes, dance classes, indoor bowls and tea dances.
