CATHOLIC CHILDREN'S SOCIETY (PLYMOUTH)

RCN 282803, Newton Abbot

The Catholic Children's Society (Plymouth) is a small children's charity working throughout Devon, Cornwall and parts of Dorset. We help families of all faiths and none in times of financial need and provide support to parents and carers in bringing up their children. We do this through our Essential Grants Programme, our Pro-active Parenting courses and our Good Shepherd programme.

CATHOLIC CHILDREN'S SOCIETY (PLYMOUTH)

One in five children living in the South West are living in poverty and in some areas of the region, poverty is even more severe.  Many parents and carers find their income does not meet their basic needs such as a working cooker, warm clothes in the winter or a proper bed to sleep in.  And then when their circumstances change suddenly, life can become even harder as they have no cushion of savings to fall back on.

Through our Essential Grants programme, parents and carers can apply to us for a grant to purchase for example, a child's bed/cot and mattress, a fridge/freezer, cooker or washing machine or some school uniform including school shoes.

With the help of a referee, two application forms are completed and sent to us for consideration,  If successful, we purchase the items on behalf of the family and arrange for them to be delivered to the family home.

In 2021, we helped 235 families with grants totalling almost £55,000, which benefitted 459 children.

We receive some lovely feedback from families and referees telling us what a massive improvement our help makes to family life including this feedback received recently -

"I can't express how thankful we are to have such kind people to have donated.  Because of the people like you, we have a fridge/freezer that me and my little one were in desperate need of.  Without the kindness of these generous people, we would not have had one and I can not thank you enough.  My daughter is super happy she now can have her pick of ice lollies!"
