Candid Arts Centre

Candid Arts Centre is a self-funded charitable arts organisation established 35 years ago.
For over a year the Centre has been seriously impacted by the noise, dust and disruption, from the demolition works at Angel Square opposite the centre which occurs 6 days a week.

Candid's art classes have been severely disrupted and the charity has not been able to maintain its programme of events or to hire out its spaces at the usual level. It is impossible to use the space for filming, rehearsals, product launches etc all of which are important revenue generators for the charity as these would be drowned out by the deafening noise opposite. Clients have decided not to go ahead with their events because of the noise and how this would impact their audience.

The proximity of Candid Arts Centre to the site is unique and so close that the noise levels have reached 97db in the building. Many of the occupants in our studios have complained about the physical and psychological impact this is having on them personally and on their small businesses. They have been unable to carry out their normal activities or to hold meetings in their studio spaces and some have even had to give notice.

This has severely reduced Candid's revenue and losses are now in six figures. Consequently, after 35 years Candid was facing closure at the end of March but
following a huge groundswell of support this deadline has been extended to the end of April to give the centre a chance to raise the funds required.

The centre holds daily life drawing classes and is home to 25 artists' studios, a gallery space of 220sqm, a music/performance/exhibition venue of 250sqm, a cinema/performance space of 160sqm, a drawing & painting studio of 220sqm, as well as a cafe/restaurant.

The largest space of its kind in Islington, London and has huge running costs. In normal times we can welcome several thousand people a week though our doors to enjoy our varied activities. But since the building work commenced Candid's revenue has been devastated. 

We have set up this appeal and offering a range of rewards for April with the goal of securing the future of the centre for the promotion of the arts and arts education.
