I want to support families to feel safe and comfortable in their homes. Children with SEND are living in accommodation with just floor boards (not the posh wooden ones) the floor boards with nails/staples sticking out of the floor. This is dangerous and for children who are unaware of danger it means constant supervision is needed. Imagine your child not being able to play in their bedroom without you beacuse they risk cutting themselves on the floorboards. This is so unfair and very worrying for parents and carers. Not to mention how cold it is, especially in the winter months. These families deserve all the support possible so it is mind blowing that their homes are not fit for purpose. Having carpets and safe flooring shouldn’t be a luxury. Unfortunately, for some families it it is.
If you rent from a landlord you would not put up without having carpets/flooring that is safe for you, so why is this acceptable from the local authority? However, this is not a choice people get before they move in. The local authority in Surrey strips all council homes and expects the new tenants to pay for everything. Families with SEND children have many other care expenses that need to take priority. This means that saving for flooring takes so much longer, we're talking months and sometimes years.
With our help families with SEND children will be able to have one less thing to worry about and have cozy, safe carpet/flooring to call theirs.
Please help if you can, thank you.
