- The Journey to Kanderstag
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the campsite, we sat on a log surrounded by fellow scouts and leaders, sharing stories of our past adventures. We laughed about the time we got lost on a hike, the mishaps with our tents, and the s’mores that turned into charred disasters. But as we reminisced, my mind was set on a new horizon—the chance to get all of the scouts to embark on a life-changing trip to Kanderstag, Switzerland.
Kanderstag isn’t just another destination on a map; it represents the essence of scouting—friendship, exploration, and personal growth. Nestled in the heart of the Alps, it promises breathtaking views, thrilling hikes, and the opportunity to connect with scouts from around the world.
This trip is not just about seeing new places; it’s about forging friendships that could last a lifetime and experiencing the camaraderie that comes from overcoming challenges together.
However, the journey to Kanderstag comes with a price—£30,000. We are looking to raise a good portion of funds for the group with the raffle and the rest through activities and fundraising in the group, we don't want to just sit down and ask for all of the money through fundraising, far from it, the scouts have to walk 6000 miles collectively before the end of next summer, not a small ask but we will do it.
At first glance, that £30,000 seems daunting, a mountain too steep to climb. But as I reflected on the impact this trip would have, I realised it is a challenge worth pursuing.
This trip represents more than just travel; it embodies growth as a person. As a scout, you learn invaluable skills—teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Each campfire story, every hike, shapes us into someone who values community and adventure. Kanderstag will allow the scouts to deepen these skills in ways I never imagined. All scouts will have the chance to lead activities, teach younger scouts, and learn from international peers who share my passion for the outdoors.
We hope to make good adults from the scouts we have in the troop.
The funds we raise will also support the scouts who may not have the means to participate in such experiences. By participating in this journey, we can all help create opportunities for them that only scouting can bring.
We have already begun to brainstorm creative fundraising ideas—everything from bake sales and car washes to community events. Each pound raised will bring us all one step closer to Kanderstag, and each effort will instil a sense of purpose in the quest.
The thought of standing atop a mountain in Kanderstag, overlooking the sprawling valleys below, fills us all with excitement. You can imagine the sense of accomplishment and the friendships forged amidst the breathtaking landscapes. It’s a moment that will inspire all in our troop, helping them to reach for their dreams, to embrace the unknown, and to understand the value of perseverance.
In every scout’s heart, there lies a desire for adventure and growth. This fundraising will help build the countless memories created from the trip and the lessons we’ll learn. This trip is more than a journey; it’s an opportunity to forge connections that will last a lifetime, to grow into leaders and responsible adults in a crazy world, and will inspire all to follow their own paths.
Together, we can make Kanderstag a reality.
