After a sell-out run at the Fringe Festival in 2024, Mythography returns with an urgent and haunting production of J. Anouilh's Antigone.

Irreverent and full of rage, this bold rewriting of an eternal myth asks questions that could shatter our world. It’s a beautiful and unforgiving shock to the system.

First staged in Paris under Nazi occupation as a symbol of radical resistance, this modern, unflinching tragedy finds new meaning through the uncompromising lens of youth. Our Antigone is a cry of absolute idealism and existential rage from a generation learning what it takes to grow up in the 21st century.

This is a story about youth on the brink — about the splintering world we've inherited and the struggle to make sense of it all.

What's new?

We are currently working on a re-development of the show for a starker, bolder and more experimental approach to myth that will speak to contemporary audiences. We will be playing with greater stylisation and physical theatre, hand held lighting, and masks to provoke and compel. We hope to reinvent our understanding of the Greek "chorus" in particular.

About us

We are an Edinburgh-based collective of emerging theatre-makers eager to shape the future of Scottish theatre.

We have been creating gut-punching theatre since 2021 and are committed to breaking down barriers for young and emerging artists in the performing arts.

Mythography unearth myths of the past and imagines myths of the future through wild rewritings and new translations.

Rooted in the fabric of our shared humanity and the practice of adaptation, our work builds bridges between cultures, languages and eras, allowing stories rip through the fabric of time and place to reach audiences here and now.

We perform for everyone and value ensemble work and large casts. We invoke our collective imagination to find the difficult questions and inspiring tales that will resonate and unite us in a divided world.

Past work

Our “Tryptic of the Young Girl” Ondine (2022), Salomé (2023), Antigone (2024) completes a three part journey through myth in search of the dangerous and elusive figure of the young girl. In different ways, Ondine, Salomé and Antigone each embody cataclysmic forces in the female form with the potential to shatter our world.

Our Aims

Mythography is a not-for-profit unincorporated association.

As per our constitution, our aims are:

• To provide pathways into professional work and break down barriers for young and emerging creatives in the performing arts
• To offer partially funded learning opportunities for young and emerging creatives to gain industry-relevant skills outwith formal education routes
• To foster community and collaboration among emerging creatives in the Edinburgh area and bring together the next generation of Scottish theatre-makers
• To create theatre of the highest quality, promote innovation, and develop work that is “raw, irreverent, and adventurous”
• To engage audiences around bold, urgent stories that amplify marginalised voices and challenge the status quo

While we are working hard to raise funds through grants and other avenues, we need the support of our community to make this project a reality.

Your donation would help cover essential costs, including:

Rights – We're bringing a rare translation of this play to Scottish stage
Artist expenses – Food and travel costs for the cast throughout the run
Marketing & Promotion – Helping us reach the widest audience possible
Production Costs – Covering set, costume, props, and technical equipment

All equipment will be donated to Bedlam Theatre (Edinburgh University Theatre Company) to benefit generations of future theatre-makers.
