0OUR STORY
In 2016 Dorset County Council withdrew all funding for the Centre and it was set to close. However, thanks to six courageous people, a charity was founded and the Centre was saved. The trust as a Charitable Interest Organisation was formed on 23 March 2016 and later that year formally took over the running of the centre.
The BYCC are very proud of the work that we do and the difference we make to people living within Bridport and neighbouring villages. We offer an array of activities, services, and initiatives for people of all ages, from all walks of life. Bridport has a high number of children assessed as poor by standard indicators. There are pockets of deprivation and these issues in part feed poor educational attainment and low adult incomes. Our service is a cross-cutting initiative that seeks to foster community engagement and help build self-esteem. The number of interactions we have with young people gives us the opportunity to make a real difference in their outcomes.
The current strength of the Youth Club is marked by the words of the CEO of the Dorset Youth Association who said in June 2022: “Bridport Youth and Community Centre is a fantastic and much-needed space for young people, the very structured youth sessions meet the needs of many young people. All young people feel safe and involved whilst at the club. To enable the youth club to continue to meet current demands, further investment is encouraged to continue the amazing work they do.”
The Centre is also a resource for a wide range of community groups and activities.
Our current plan is to put the Centre on a financially sustainable footing. This involves finding alternative methods of funding and increasing the revenue generating opportunities through the hiring of the facilities.
Our future plans envisage updating the Centre so that we have a building that offers modern facilities that are fit for the purpose of contemporary youth work and at the same time very flexible to support a range of uses for the community.
