Christmas is a special time for many people, and the switching on of the Christmas lights is a tradition that many families hold very dear to their hearts. Sadly the future of our Christmas lights isn't secure - it depends entirely on donations. Here in Thirsk, our lights are entirely funded by the proceeds raised by the Thirsk Ladies volunteers. Each year, they put on events to cover the £15,000 it costs to erect, maintain, insure, run and take down the Christmas lights - no funding is granted from local government outside a £500 donation from Thirsk Town Council.
Funds are dwindling, but we still want to put on a brilliant display, and we want to take the lights into Finkle Street too. We need your support more than ever if we are to keep the lights operational, and to make this year the most Christmassy yet.
We're asking you to pledge £5 to 'buy a bulb' and help light up Thirsk. We appreciate your help!
