The tea estate community remains one of the most oppressed areas in Sri Lanka. Education is severely underfunded and doesn't prepare students for life or work. Many children live below the poverty line and in families where alcoholism and domestic violence are dominant.
Jenita (Jenny) and her family benefited from free English education at Tea Leaf Trust and she is passionate about bringing high-quality, caring and fun English learning to young children. She was a teacher and Principal at Tea Leaf until 2019. Since then she has been teaching English to children and young people in several different communities. Now she is bringing this passion to the young children in her community.
Jenita has worked hard to get government permission and community support. But she needs our help - the building she has found needs work to make it suitable and safe for the young children to learn.
Jenita needs £1500 - £1000 will be spent on the construction materials and £500 on the wages for the labourers.
Our preschool will provide early education in English, Tamil, and Sinhalese, alongside a Montessori curriculum. This strong foundation will help them gain confidence, overcome fear of learning, and succeed in their ongoing education.
Jenita is an experienced educator. After leaving Tea Leaf, she trained as a Montessori teacher and ran a successful English medium preschool (see below.) She is passionate about child development and continues to study to support children more, recently completing an online course in child development with the Sri Lankan Open University.
