Buddy Up is a mentoring charity for young people aged 11-16 years old. We are based in Surrey and offer young people the chance to work with an experienced mentor and youth worker to support them on a variety of issues.
We are currently working in a number of schools and pupil referral units across the borough and we are growing fast. We are inundated with referrals and are trying to meet the demand.
Why mentoring?
Mentoring is a proven approach to increase confidence in young people and improve their mental health. Students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class. As well as this, young people who meet regularly with their mentors are 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to start drinking. It is also proven that mentoring reduces “depression symptoms” and increases “social acceptance, academic attitudes and grades.” (statistics from youthmentor.org).
