BSG Robotics: Empowering girls in STEM through innovation, collaboration, and leadership. Help us to the National Champs!

by BSG Robotics - Girls' Robotics and STEM Outreach Club in Bournemouth, Dorset, United Kingdom

 New stretch target

Extra money will enhance our kits and outreach materials used by primary school children later in the academic year. We can make some epic sessions on computing and robotics for children in the Bournemouth/Poole/Christchurch Area.

About Team ULTRAVIOLET

We're Team UV and we are an all-girls national award winning robotics team from Bournemouth. We have got into the FIRST Tech Challenge UK National Championships for the second year running and we need YOUR help to make it happen.

Our Team meets three times weekly to work on a robot to solve an annually set game by FTC. We work together and develop our mechanical, electrical and software engineering skills alongside other design, leadership and team-working skills.

What robots?

We design our robots from various building materials including plastic, wood and metals. Our design process includes using CAD designs and 3D printed design. We adapt the robot based on the annual challenge and you can see our design for the robot at the regional stage of the competition below. From what we learnt at regionals we are completely redesigning our robot to ensure it can compete better on the National Stage!

The robot must be able to work autonomously as well as be driver operable. We do this by coding it in Java and using sensors and programming object recognition using webcams.

We also conduct STEM outreach to local primary schools and the wider community.

Last year we won three national award including the THINK Award for our engineering process and also came runners up in two other categories. This season so far we won the regional INSPIRE Award in the Southwest. This is the biggest award in the competition that resulted from our community work alongside our work on our engineering and robotics. We aim to match this at the national champs and we need your help.

To get to the final we need to raise money for transport and equipment/ robot components to help enhance our robot and team's capabilities. Every penny you donate will go to helping us get there, and give us the best chance of achieving success. We want to show how girls can get engineering done! Help us inspire other girls into the engineering and tech sectors.

About BSG Robotics - www.bsgrobotics.uk

At BSG Robotics our Core Mission is Building Engineers of the Future. We are an all girls robotics, engineering and STEM Outreach club that aims to inspire the next generation of students in the engineering and tech sectors.

Founded in 2022, our club consists of three teams of students ranging from aged 12 to 17 supported by staff volunteers and Sixth Form student mentors. We meet three times a week in our design technology department. In just 18 months we have coached over 70 girls through the FIRST Tech Challenge programme and managed student-led outreach to over 500 pupils in other local schools. As the Southwest Champion Org. we also support all the teams in the SW region which this year was 25 teams across 22 schools including over 400 children participating in engineering and tech.

About FIRST Tech Challenge UK

FIRST Tech Challenge empowers young people aged 12-18 with the technical knowledge and soft skills to thrive in STEM and beyond. Working like teams in industry, they design, build and programme a robot to compete at progressive events. Over 120 teams competed at qualifying tournaments and up to 40 teams will compete nationally at the UK champs in Cambridge this June. The challenge is run by charity, FIRST UK, with a mission to make STEM less intimidating, more diverse and inclusive. In 2023:

●  71% now wish to pursue a career in STEM

●  41% identify as girls or non-binary

●  37% are from ethnically diverse backgrounds
