Aim: To create more Pay and Play tennis for all the local community and club by building 3 artificial clay courts and refitting 1 carpet court

Who are we?

Highgate is a busy, welcoming and inclusive multi sports community club providing tennis, cricket and strength & conditioning activities, We encourage all who want to enjoy all these activities. We have partnerships with local schools, Metro blind sport, and run inclusive tennis coaching programmes alongside our junior participation & performance programme and adult coaching for all levels. We are considered as an exemplar for running inclusive programs by the LTA.We pride ourselves on keeping costs and membership fees down to encourage all comers to play and use the club. We are embedding sustainability into our energy consumption, starting off getting meters to assess our water, gas and electricity consumption. Then we have started to look at ways of reducing any energy burdens and using LED floodlights as one way we will achieve using energy responsibly. Also we have started to develop our recycling process and pedestrianisation of our grounds which has changed members behaviour through these Our cricket groundsman is managing our water consumption by both plant management and a water usage plan. We are also looking for grant funding to change our heavy duty grass mowers to run via electric motors.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We are part way through a project to convert 3 ancient shale courts without floodlighting to new all weather artificial clay, and to refurbish one carpet court that currently has halogen lighting.

We are seeking additional funding to fully complete the project. If we can secure extra funding, we will be able to install LED floodlighting this year, which will use less energy, as part of aim to become a more sustainable and eco-friendly club. Additional funds will also allow us to complete some unexpected extra works which have arisen during the foundation works for our new courts.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We have a shortfall on the £411,000 project of £38k

We also need to raise £57k for floodlights, this includes converting one court with environmentally unfriendly  halogen floodlights to LED, and installing the environmentally preferred LED lights for the main 3 artificial clay courts which currently have no lights.

Contingency £5k

= £100k Crowdfunding target.

Community impact

The old shale courts were out of play November till March or April and had no floodlights for evening play, and were not wheelchair accessible.  Highgate's membership is currently closed, due to a lack of court availability. and this project will allow us to accommodate more players of all levels locally, increase our outreach work with schools, and provide more Pay and Play opportunities for members of the community.

The combination of the improved surface and the addition of floodlighting will lead to a playable hours capacity of over 180% of the current shale courts with particular benefits in the winter and evenings. The new courts will be wheelchair accessible, and the artificial clay courts will be beneficial for all levels of play including older members and our walking tennis group.
