The Galloway Herds is a Scots poem lampooning the Kirkcudbrightshire clergy of the 1820s. Despite its local popularity, the poem wasn't printed until 1909. Instead, it circulated in several manuscripts and as the compiler of 1909 edition notes, "scarcely two of these are alike".
One of these manuscripts, written in Gatehouse in 1828 has come up for sale. I'd like for it to return to Galloway and for the text to be made available on the internet.
If we can raise the money to buy the manuscript, I'll scan it and upload the images to the Internet Archive. After that, I'll donate the manuscript to a local museum or library, ideally as close to Gatehouse of Fleet as possible.
