What is Real? What Is Not?
Blurred is a psychological drama set in the 1970s, crafted by a passionate group of student filmmakers at Belfast Met’s E3 Studios. This project is deeply personal to us, as it represents the culmination of our years of study and collaboration. The story explores complex themes of guilt, memory, and perception, drawing inspiration from films like Shutter Island and Memento to create a suspenseful and immersive experience for viewers.
The Story of Blurred
In 1972, Clive appears to be a devoted family man living a quiet structured life with his wife, Diana. Their days are filled with familiar routines - shared meals, playful humour, and tender moments that suggest a loving, ordinary household. As they approach their 7th wedding anniversary, Clive is eager to celebrate their bond, showing affection and care for Diana, whom he seems to cherish deeply.
But as the story unfolds, subtle cracks begin to appear in Clive’s reality. Conversations with Diana feel slightly off, and her overly cheerful demeanour raises unsettling questions. These small inconsistencies cause Clive to question what he knows to be real. His suspicions grow when a woman who looks almost identical to Diana arrives on their anniversary. Though she appears familiar, there’s something unnervingly calculated about her presence, as if she’s hiding something from him.
As Clive’s perception unravels, his unease deepens, leading him toward an unsettling and life-altering discovery. But to reveal more would spoil the shocking twist that lies at the heart of Blurred. The truth about Clive’s reality is something we want you to experience first hand - trust us, you won’t see it coming.
Blurred is set in the early-to-mid 1970s, so the visual aesthetic will be very much of the time - a retro, mid-century household heavily featuring a yellow, brown and orange colour palette. Residual elements of the 50s and 60s also naturally linger in what’s on the television and radio, as well as some of Clive and Diana’s decor and attire. The effect of the blended eras enhances the murkiness of Clive’s day-to-day perspective. It also speaks to the unethical mental health treatment that took place across these decades on the minds of mentally vulnerable people. We drew inspiration aesthetically and thematically from films and television shows such as Shutter Island (2010), Zodiac (2007), Fallout, Twin Peaks, Mad Men, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), Don’t Look Now (1973) and The Truman Show (1998).
