Mini Meadows Ocean Fund

Aim: The Ocean Conservation Trust's programme, Blue Meadows, is a holistic approach to seagrass protection, regeneration and restoration at scale

Seagrass is one of the most ecologically valuable, biodiverse and beautiful habitats on the planet. It is a nature-based solution to the climate and biodiversity crises, is essential for keeping our seas clean and clear, and protecting our coastal communities. Over the last century the UK has lost around 90% of its seagrass meadows, largely through physical disturbance, pollution and disease.

Blue Meadows, run by the Ocean Conservation Trust, is a holistic approach to seagrass conservation. We aim to protect what we have left, restore what we have lost. We do this through:

• Protection: installing sensitive habitat marker buoys we make seagrass visible to water users and encourage no anchoring over seagrass meadows.
• Restoration: growing seagrass from seed to healthy plants and transplanting them back into the sea, to rebuild these vital habitats.
• Community Engagement: working alongside local communities to connect them to seagrass and empower them to take action for their local meadows.

The protection and restoration of our seagrass habitats needs vital and urgent investment, put simply: Nature cannot wait. Our Mini Meadows Ocean Fund offers people a direct way to contribute towards the protection and restoration of our seagrass meadows in one powerful package.  

What is Mini Meadows Ocean Fund? 

Our Mini Meadows Ocean Fund is a scalable solution to support our critical work, and is a simple, effective way for you to make a real difference. 

• 1 Mini Meadow represents 10 square metres of healthy, mature seagrass meadows: 4 times the size of your average double bed!
• 1 Mini Meadow has the potential to capture 9.6kgs of carbon (minimum), 4.2kgs of nitrogen (maximum) and provides a habitat for over 1,000 marine creatures. 

In addition, healthy seagrass meadows help to support oxygen production, reduce coastal erosion and play an important part in sustaining community wellbeing and cultural heritage, inspiring a lasting connection to the Ocean, helping people to feel happy, calm and healthy. 

1 Mini Meadow needs £50 to support our conservation work over a 5 year period: the minimum timeline nature needs.   

You choose the number of Mini Meadows you support based on the impact you want to have- there is no limit! For example, £1000 could fund 20 Mini Meadows, £10,000 could fund 200 Mini Meadows, £100,000 could fund 2000 Mini Meadows.

The bigger your contribution, the bigger your impact for nature. No matter how many Mini Meadows you choose to support, you will be helping us with our goal to restore 50 hectares of seagrass annually in the UK and protect a further 700 hectares of seagrass by 2027.

Your contribution will have an array of benefits for nature, and we will help you tell the story of your impact. For every donation made, you will receive a personalised digital certificate and a Mini Meadows marketing toolkit.
