The problem
Spain changed the national law to give cats more protection. This was for domestic and stray cats alike. The new law states that all cats should be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. They should be fed and cared for. However, the result of this law in Blanca has meant that cats and kittens have been abandoned on the street. Although the town hall are duty bound to take the role of care giver Blanca town hall have refused and are ignoring legal requests to do their job.
The feeding of the cats and kittens has been left to a very few volunteers. We have seen the number of cats in just one colony increase from 4 or 5 to over 20 in less than a year, all due to the law change that people do not want to abide by.
Purdey. Our latest rescue....Photos taken 3 months apart, before and after medical and loving care.
We have had to rescue Purdey, another street cat recently because she was clearly ill. We took her to our vet who told us that this tiny cat was actually 8 or 9 years old, weighing nearly 1 kilo only! She had tests that showed she had FIV (feline aids). She could not mix with our other cats so has to remain penned in for much of the day. After 3 months of loving care and numerus visits to the vet, she now is a happy little girl weighing over 3 kilos, loving life. She gets to go for walks in her harness and explores her new surroundings. She also loves ping pong!
She is just one of over 20, but we cannot save them all. All they ask is for a loving home, food to fill them and medicine when they are unwell. However, we now are financially stretched to breaking point and are struggling to even care for our own 9 cats. We simply can't do this alone! To look after them properly costs in medical fees too. They need spaying, vaccinating and microchipping. Also they will need shelters building as winter draws closer.
We have started to place collection points for food and donations locally, but we need so much more if we are to look after the medical needs of these beautiful creatures.
What you can do.
Simply put, make a donation here, as much or as little as possible because this is urgent and these beautiful creatures desperately need your help right now!
Please help!
