The aim of our project is to work with the women living in Birmingham who are experiencing poor wellbeing due socio-economic impacts.

by Home Housing in Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom

We are Home Housing, a charity based in Erdington, Birmingham with the mission of empowering women to become the best versions of themselves. We started in 2024 because we saw the growing problem of mental health among women in our community due to a range of socio-economic issues. We offer a range of workshops like mental health education, physical exercise programs and mentorships to ensure women are going through personal development which positively impacts the community.

We are calling on your help raise funding for Birmingham Zumba Fitness Initiative. This will run for 6 months and serve 100 different women living in Birmingham, accessible to all. We are working to grow a community of women that care about their health and wellbeing but this can only be achieved through a collaborative effort.

Help Us Rebuild Our Community

Who Do We Aim To Support?

Home Housing started in February with the focus of working with the women in Birmingham to creative a culture of support and upliftment. Through surveys and conversations, we've gained a deep understanding of the challenges women face and their desire for change. By carrying out this project, we understand we are moving closer to becoming an equal, inclusive and connected community.

In February, we had another one of our Women's Empowerment monthly meetings. Here we discussed the lack of women's physical and mental health development in our community. We held a survey the following week outside the Bullring Shopping Centre and had the chance to speak with 105 women above 18. We found out the following.

•             67% are not currently physically active

•             85% said their lack of exercise is related to financial barriers.

•             72% say they experience inequalities that impact their wellbeing as women

•             62% don’t feel connected to other women in the community

•             80% said they would enrol in free fitness classes for women living in Birmingham.

As a community organisation dedicated to the upliftment of women, we are compelled to take proactive measures to bridge the health gap and ensure access to fitness and health advice for all women.

How Will Participants Benefit?

2.           Enhance the mental wellbeing of participants, with 80% reporting improved mood, reduced stress, and increased self-confidence in post-project surveys.

3.           Strengthen social cohesion, with 60% of participants reporting new friendships and a stronger sense of community belonging in post-project surveys.

4.           Increase the participation rate in organised sports activities by 30% among women in the community.

Wider anticipated benefits:

•             Reduced healthcare costs and lessened burden on local services

Your Support Will Allow Us to Achieve Our Goals

Our vision for this project is to facilitate positive, enduring transformation by empowering participants to acquire knowledge, skills and support that increase growth and well-being. This project can enhance fulfilment in each of the participants. Overall, we hope to discard the reinforced inequalities caused by COVID-19 as this had a detrimental impact on many who live in Birmingham. We want to give people the opportunity to engage back into fitness in a way that creates community togetherness, support, upliftment and personal development in Birmingham.

Our weekly sessions will allow women to come together and address their issues in a holistic way. Participants will be given the opportunity to work with or mentors to understand their personal goals and ways we can offer the help they need. Each week, Home Housing will be conducting evaluations through feedback forms and open discussions to see how to get an insight into participants’ experience.
