The Bird of Prey Project

RCN 1152982, Bath

Our mission is to restore habitats, conserve birds of prey and make wildlife education accessible to all.

Here at the Bird of Prey Project we have a mission: Restore habitats, Conserve Birds of Prey and make wildlife education accessible to all.

How are we doing it? We have boots on the ground working to make space for wildlife and amber listed species in farming environments, alongside spreading a message of ecosystem-wide nature recovery from our award winning visitor centre.

You won't protect something you don't care about - and here at The Project we are all about making wildlife inspiration and the mental wellbeing benefits it brings - accessible to all communities.

The Cavity Nesting Species Programme:

We're working with land managers in the south west of England to monitor four cavity nesting species of raptor - The Tawny Owl, The Little Owl, The European Kestrel and The Barn Owl, alongside improving the suitability of habitats in these agricultural environments. Through this project we are working with The Hawk and Owl Trust and providing data for the British Trust for Ornithology, through monitoring metapopulations of amber listed species and the effects on these populations from climate and land-use change. One great success from this work was the arrival of Barn Owls on one of our monitored farms after they'd been absent from observations for over 30 years, when we installed a nest box on the site!

Alongside the Cavity Nesting Species Programme, the Project also has an on-site Rehabilitation Hospital for wild raptors and facilitates local research projects supporting wildlife conservation or the enhancement of raptor welfare.

Our multi-award winning Visitor Centre in Newton St Loe, Bath, not only funds the majority of our charitable objectives, but is also home to our 23 resident birds and is at the core of our education programme. Many of our resident birds are re-homed from previous care, and using modern high trust voluntary training techniques, have new, happy lives at The Project.

Our specially trained senior bird team work hard to provide the very highest standard of care for our birds possible, whilst inspiring a love for wildlife and the birds we can spot from our back door through our flying display and experience programme.

Accessible Wildlife Education

Accessing nature experiences is often something made challenging through invisible barriers - from wealth, to location, family connections or education.

Making nature based learning accessible for diverse communities and groups irrelevant of age or background is one of our core objectives. We firmly believe that practical wildlife education is vital for all age groups, and in 2024 we began work providing free virtual education material to UK schools and developing education programmes to provide free of charge for charities working with disadvantaged groups in our local area.
