Launching 'Ambition 125' for the 125th anniversary of Burntisland Golf House Club.

by Burntisland Golf House Club in Burntisland, Fife, United Kingdom

Burntisland Golf House Club (BGHC) celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2023. As part of the celebrations, we are launching Ambition 125 to raise funds which will be invested to enhance our course and club facilities.

A registered Community Amateur Sports Club, BGHC is an important local sporting venue. The course and club facilities are run by its 450 members, but it is also open to members of the community for golf, coaching, and social events. Our aim is to improve the golfing experience, offer more affordable coaching and give more people in our community better access to the game of golf and our club facilities.

Golf has been played at Burntisland since as early as the 1660s.  The original club, Burntisland Golf Club was established in 1797, and is the 10th oldest Club in the world.  When the railway was built in 1840’s, the original club lost a significant proportion of the original course on Burntisland Links. In 1889, the members pooled their resources and raised funds (equivalent to £660,000 today) to buy land at Dodhead, to the north of the town, and In 1898 the “new” Club was formed to build the Golf House: Burntisland Golf House Club.

We have been serving the Fife community now for over 225 years.  125 of those years,  since the Golf Club House was built, have taken their toll on the facilities.  It has been 50 years since the last major renovation.

Alongside the need to improve the House, the members of the club have expressed their ambition to enhance the course. We also want to improve accessibility to the game of golf and introduce new affordable coaching services for beginners.

Ambition 125 aims to raise a total of £75,000 primarily from Club members, but also from our stakeholders and those who love golf or simply enjoy our great social facilities, events and activities.

100% of funds raised will be invested to raise the ambition of:

THE HOUSE:

  • Renovate key features of the Clubhouse including major roof upgrading, renovate the toilets, showers and lounge
  • Introduce new facilities to promote accessibility and equality, making the clubhouse more welcoming and accommodating for all

THE GAME OF GOLF:

  • Enhance and improve Burntisland Golf Academy, a successful Junior Coaching Programme, introducing new coaching equipment and expanding the Academy to provide more spaces for youngsters alongside new services for adults and beginners
  • Introduce more affordable access to golf for those on low income

THE COURSE:

  • Improve the course to make it more accessible for players with limited mobility; improving paths, stepping bunkers and tees, new handrails etc
  • Improve the longevity of the course and help minimise the effects of severe weather resultant from climate change
