What is Bench?

Bench is going to be a neighbourhood bistro with great food, great drinks and a small shop element. It’s an extension of a series of successful pop-ups we have done over the past couple of years in Sheffield. It’s something that’s been in our heads for a long time, and now we have found a space in Nether Edge we’re excited to be able to put down roots in a place we can call 'home'.

What will Bench be like?

A communal setting for drinking and dining. We want it to be fun and we want it to be informal. We want everyone to be comfortable when they’re inside our space. Most importantly, we want to Bench to be an extension of ourselves. We want it to be like coming around to our house, grabbing a drink and a bite to eat and just having a good time.

Why do we need help?

With your help we’ll be able to make sure we have the best ventilation and extraction needed to ensure a nice environment for our guests. In our opinion, there's nothing worse than a smoky, smell-lingering space, and this is something we really want to make sure we get right, not only for our guests but for the community too, ensuring it is completely odourless. 

We also want to support local independent businesses as much as possible, such as our favourite local joiner Rocket Design to build the 'Bench' and brilliant local ceramicist Grey Suit Clay to make our crockery. There are some amazing people in this city doing brilliant things and we’d love to work with them to celebrate the city and make sure we boost the local economy – not the bank accounts of the big chains and corporations.

What will we get for our investment?

In return for your investment we’ve invited over some friends to come and cook in a series of Sunday Sessions. A celebration of some of our favourite local places like Pina and VorV, as well as friends from afar like Anglothai legends John & Diz, Brad Carter of Michelin starred Carters of Moseley, Sam Grainger of Belzan, Cinder and Madre, and Lee Wescott, most recently of Michelin starred Pensons.

They will be over serving family-style Sunday feasts. Some breakfasts, some brunches, some dinners.

As well as this, we’re also gonna knock out our inaugural Bench merch. Pins, tees and totes. Super stylish fashion accessories, all acting as a little thank-you to help us reach our goal.

And then of course you can get gift vouchers for drinking and dining at Bench. Also, if you’re feeling really flush we’ll even bring Bench to your home, or you can hire the whole place out for a private do.

Finally, if you wanna just be an absolute legend, you can just stick us a bit of money to basically say good luck and here’s a little something to help you on your way. Literally anything you guys can give us is crazy helpful and we will be forever grateful.

We are super stoked for this - we’ve been lucky enough to eat and drink at cub a couple of times and once at their takeover in Paris and loved it. We cannot wait to host them in Sheffield. VorV Brunch Takeover

VorV opened in December 2019 to a pretty stellar reception. As opposed to cooking ‘vegetarian food’ head chef Danny Lynn is cooking vegetables in a seriously exciting and delicious way. A keen advocate of open fire cooking himself expect a brunch of the highest calibre. We’re psyched to blend Danny’s style of food with Bench’s communal dining vibe and a ton of afternoon boozing. Piña’s Mexican Breakfast

Our great pals opened Piña just before what we will always refer to as ‘Our Summer of Love’. England were gonna win the World Cup, it was stupidly hot, Pops was here and we finally knew what good Mexican food tasted like! We thought it sounded like a good idea to drink Mezcal before mid-day so we’ve got them doing their version of a breakfast / brunch / mezcal family meal extravaganza. Sunday Jan 31st 2021. Brunch. Sam Grainger of Belzan /Madre / Cinder Fame

We’ve done stuff together and eaten Sam’s food a good few times now and he smashes it every time! Belzan opened to huge success in 2017 and since then Cinder and Madre have followed. So we’re getting him over to bring the power of this eclectic collective. We’ve forged a great relationship with the Liverpool lads and value their friendship and respect them very highly. Boss! AngloThai Love-In

Anglothai (John & Diz Chantarasak) hold a special place in our hearts. The pop-up pro's, having success all over the UK - including at Counter Culture & Newcomer Wines as well as appearing on Great British Menu. They’re great pals and we can’t wait to have them back in Sheffield. Calling it the best Thai food would be a disservice, its arguably the best food we’ve ever eaten. Period. Brad Carter’s Sunday Session

Carters of Moseley opened in 2010 and gained a Michelin Star five years later. One of our favourite restaurants, we've been lucky to enough to dine a few times at Carter’s and Brad, Holly & the whole team smash it every time. Dinner with Mr. Lee Westcott

The last chef in our Sunday Sessions Series needs no introduction. Protégé of Tom Aikens and a CV that includes Per Se, Noma and Claridge's, we are buzzing to have Mr. Lee Westcott up to takeover Bench. Most recently of Pensons in Worcestershire, where he was awarded a Michelin star just eight months after opening. Lee's food is next level and we cant wait to have him up!
