The Cause
On the 25th May 2024, at the age of 16 years old, Ben Bradford passed away. Ben was fit and healthy at the time of his passing but simply slipped away in his sleep very unexpectedly which came as a huge shock to family, friends, and the extended community.
Ben was a kind, generous and considerate young man with a huge passion for life and in particular football. Football was Ben’s life, whether it was playing for his local school and boys club teams or heading to Pittodrie to support his beloved Aberdeen FC. He would spend endless hours each week catching up with all the games on the TV to extend his knowledge for the game he loved so much. The irony of it all, is that Ben died on the morning of cup final day where he was due to line up with his friends at Aberdeen FC’s Cormack Park in the ADJFA Under 16’s league cup final for Cove Youth United.
In May 2024, Ben had just completed his National 5 exams and enjoying some free time from school before he was due to return to concentrate on his higher education at Lochside Academy. Sadly, Ben never made that return.
The ‘Ben Bradford BB14’ charity has been proposed in memory of Ben, so his kindness, generosity and love of football can be used to keep his memory alive and ultimately help support those in need. The charity will thrive on the foundation of Ben’s values and passions and help make a positive difference to so many lives. The charity registration is currently pending and expected to be fully approved by the end of 2024.
The charity aims to support families and their children by offering free sports and recreation services that they may not be able to afford on their own. The charity will also provide sports camps in the school holidays to ensure kids have a safe space to learn and play sports which will support their health and wellbeing.
The charity will focus on recreational sports with a particular focus on football. Coaching, refereeing and sports first aid will all be catered for as part of the program to offer an education as well as the physical participation. Training will be provided, and competence assessed for those who wish for formal accreditation with Scottish Football Association (SFA) available programs.
One of the charity main long-term projects will be to help support the building of a community sports campus, which will include an all-weather floodlit football pitch in the Cove area of Aberdeen. This will be a facility open to the community to use and where the charity will operate. Elements of the campus will be named after Ben Bradford and the subsequent charity. The new facility is proposed to generate some non-profit income which will support the charity for long term sustainability.
