Dear Neighbours and Supporters,
I'm William Poulter, and I've decided to run as an Independent candidate in Exeter because I've had enough of being told to accept things as they are. Recently, I was made redundant as a support worker due to cuts in public services. When I questioned why, I was repeatedly told that nothing ever changes—that's just the way it is. But I refuse to believe that.
These experiences have driven me to join the Assemble network of Independents, where we're pushing for a different kind of politics—one that starts with you. Instead of party agendas, we're building our manifesto directly from community assemblies here in Exeter.
Our Aims:
- To mobilise a disengaged public and empower ordinary people through community assemblies.
- To craft a manifesto that truly reflects the needs of Exeter and elect William Poulter to Parliament.
- To replace the House of Lords with a House of the People—a citizens assembly that represents all of us, not just the wealthy few.
My Guiding Principles:
- Trusting the people to make common sense decisions
- Spreading hope and optimism, instead of division and cynicism
- Social fairness and respect for life
- Protection of ecosystems and livelihoods
- Following the best available scientific knowledge
- Consulting those impacted by planning
The House of the People would work alongside the House of Commons. Ordinary people would be selected, like a jury, to hear the evidence and contribute to Parliament’s decision making. What would it do?
- Deliver the public’s true agenda
- Hold politicians accountable to what they say
- Dismantle big money lobbying in Parliament
- Represent people from all walks of life
- Tackle the biggest problems of our time
Together, we're challenging the status quo. We're mobilising our community and empowering everyday citizens to tackle issues like housing, healthcare, and the environment head-on.
