Following inspection by Health and Safety professionals, the beloved playground at Ashburton Primary School has been deemed unfit and unsafe to use. The equipment has reached the end of its life and is now beyond economical repair.
Removal of the current playground, purchasing of new equipment and the resurfacing is an unaffordable cost. The school are part of the Westcountry Schools Trust. The Trust has recently given funding for repair of the roof, new IT and security equipment throughout the school and so sadly have reached the limit of the funds they can give for the foreseeable future. As such the school have asked the Friends of Ashburton Primary School charity to generate much-needed funds to refurbish the School's play area, providing a safe and stimulating environment for the 200 pupils of our school here in Devon.
As you can no doubt imagine, the playground is the hub of the school. There is ever-growing evidence showing how play is imperative for children, as is spending time each day outdoors. As children grow and enter the education system they are expected to learn in more formal ways. Ensuring children have time to play, in its purest form, means they can continue to develop and expand their sensory experiences.
The new playground will not only improve physical fitness but also encourage social interaction, creativity, and teamwork among our students. It will serve children of all ages and abilities, ensuring inclusivity and fostering a sense of community within our school from our 4 year olds in Reception, right through Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2. Without the funds being secured and a new playground being installed, the play equipment will be out of bounds for children returning on 5th September 2025.
The existing play equipment is cornered off because it is not a safe space for the children to use. All 200 pupils are currently using a hard tarmac playground without any equipment to play on.
Friends of Ashburton Primary School have researched and received quotes from leading, professional and recommended playground suppliers such as Rhino Play and Outdoor Play. They have also run sessions with the children to hear their vision for a new play area. The initial fundraising target is £15,000.
£15,000 will resurface the play area, making it a safer environment for all to use and to purchase new play equipment to ensure all children at Ashburton Primary School have a safe and engaging space to play. The new play equipment will include trim trails that are suitable for all age groups. This will support gross motor skills and encourage physical activity and being outdoors. They would also love to refresh the markings and paintings on the tarmac which have faded away over time.
