Staging 'An Unexpected Hiccup' is our first time working face to face after 12 months online and we need extra support to achieve this.

by Wendy West in Edinburgh, United Kingdom

We are very, very excited to be getting the company together to start rehearsals for An Unexpected Hiccup, our first live production in over 2 years. An Unexpected Hiccup is our new production in collaboration with Plutot La Vie.

As some of you may know Lung Ha is a company of learning-disabled actors. As a result of the global pandemic and the risk posed to the whole company, we decided to move all our work and interactions online. We have been running our sessions over zoom and the company has responded fantastically well, but in a recent survey they all stated they were so looking forward to being in a real room again as soon as it is safe to do so.

We are determined to achieve this and are working hard to ensure all the safety measures and extra support required are in place for us to stage An Unexpected Hiccup. But because of this, the rehearsal process will take a bit longer and the costs will be a bit higher.

And that’s where we really need your help. Although we have the generous support of several funders, the budget is now higher because of the extra measures we are taking. Donating will enable us to fund the additional development weeks for the actors and support workers and will provide the budget to carry out robust Covid Risk Assessments and ensure we have all the necessary materials and equipment in place. Additional measures need to be in place to allow the production to take place on the stage and to ensure we are working in a Covid compliant way and that the actors and production team are working in a safe environment.

Thanks for any support you can give us, it will really make a difference.

What it means for our actors: It means the world to our actors to work with Lung Ha and be back performing on stage - 'Thank you Lung Ha for giving me such wonderful opportunities during these difficult times. I am so lucky to be part of this amazing group'.  'The fear of not being able to do a show in person is a worry'.

If you would like to see An Unexpected Hiccup, it will take place at The Studio at the Festival Theatre on 26-30 October 2021 at 7.30pm (2.30pm matinees on Thursday and Saturday).

Exciting times lie ahead, and the outcome of this creative partnership promises to be accessible, challenging, theatrical and entertaining, but more importantly, it provides the platform for two companies to collaborate and perform together, with a view to a future Scottish tour.
