Covid has hit young people hard. Our goal is simple: to provide a temporary home for young homeless people and support to find a job.

by The Amber Foundation in Dorking, England, United Kingdom

Our goal is simple: to help young homeless people find a fulfilling job and a safe place to call home.

Young people have been some of the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Youth homelessness and unemployment are both rising at alarming rates and 1 in 4 young people have struggled with their mental health and been left ‘unable to cope.’   Job losses and the breakdown of family relationships are making more young people homeless and the impact on their immediate welfare and long term prospects are huge.

But with your support, Amber will help.

Amber's Role

Every £30 we raise will stop a young person sleeping rough for a night.

At our centres in Surrey, Wiltshire and Devon, we provide not only a temporary place to call home, but also the structure and support needed for those young people to re-build their lives. We help young people deal with the issues that have been holding them back so that they can move forward in life with confidence. Most of the young people who stay at Amber have left school with no qualifications, often struggle with their mental health and have substance misuse issues. We support the young people to gain qualifications, offer counselling, provide opportunities for work experience or volunteering and teach the young people life skills, such as managing a weekly budget or being able to understand a tenancy agreement, so that they can move on successfully with their lives.

Why we need your support

We have kept our centres in Surrey, Wiltshire & Devon open to young homeless people throughout the pandemic at a time when costs have increased (PPE, sanitisation measures, testing kits) and fundraising has declined, as traditional fundraising such as events or community activities have not been allowed. With the increase in youth homelessness and unemployment, we need to raise £10,000 to provide 330 nights accommodation for young people, with all the support they need to move on positively with their lives.

What people have to say about Amber

Jane, a Court Usher had this to say about Amber recently "Last week we conducted a virtual hearing with a young man you were helping to turn his life around. In Court, particularly at the moment there are dark days when the system seems broken. Your support, structure and belief in this young man was a chink of light and you deserve support."

Tasha (18) arrived at Amber last July. She had been street homeless following a few troubled years culminating in her being recruited into a drug-selling gang. Although she escaped, she was trying to deal with the effects of withdrawal from drugs when she arrived at Amber and found the first few weeks tough. However, she persevered and got involved in volunteering and also worked with Gasp Motor Project to renovate a go-kart. This project sparked an interest in mechanics and Tasha is now studying full-time for a mechanics qualification. Tasha moved out last October into a shared house and had this to say; “If I hadn’t come to Amber, I think I’d be dead or in prison. I would definitely still be using as I couldn’t see any way out from the situation that I was in. Amber saved me.”
