Aim: Help us raise money for our student short film 'All That's Left' 🌱
Synopsis
A woman revisits the place where she was left by her mother as a child.
Returning to the past through flashbacks, 'May' relives bittersweet memories through her mother's clothes, still hanging on the washing line, waiting to be returned to.
Looking back at her painful past, she tries to understand why her mother left and find peace with her absence in both timelines.
This short film is a meditative, atmospheric exploration of memory, nostalgia, and abandonment. All that is left of a person once they leave, and all that they leave behind, is the core of this film.
Told through a nonlinear structure and childlike perspective, the film follows a woman who returns to her late mother’s home and finds a washing line left suspended in time. As she packs away the clothes, she relives memories of her childhood, blurring between past and present. The intimate and close framing of the film allows us to truly connect with our protagonist, May. With the film exploring very personal themes, it's vital that our audience goes on this journey with the character, and this will be achieved through the cinematography and subtle performances.
The environment shown in the film is both a physical and psychological container for time, silence, and things left unsaid, portrayed through the items left behind by her mother. The washing line is vital to transporting May back to her childhood, each piece of clothing holding a memory, all taken in by the environment due to the passing of time.
Through restrained performances, natural light, and a minimalistic soundscape, the film will beautifully explore how our past stays with us despite time's passing. It resists resolution, instead offering a sense of reconciliation through gesture: the folding of a shirt, the leaving of a car, the letting go of something never quite held.
This is a story written from the heart. A real story that happens to real people.
The short film will beautifully encapsulate how our past can stay with us and how deep down we always will feel like the child we once were, and the beauty in that, despite reflecting on darker times.
Your donations will go directly toward:
By donating, you’re not just funding a short film, you’re helping us tell a story that speaks to the quiet moments that define us, the memories we carry, and the healing that can begin when we confront what’s been left behind.
If you've ever held onto a piece of clothing because of the person it reminds you of, or walked into a space that brought the past rushing back — this is your film too.
