Yes, we are undertaking an immense task to help the poorest people here who struggle to put food on the table for their families. I have acquired 13 rye of fine arable farmland, which is currently barren. The site also includes two large natural ponds that need refurbishing to be stocked with edible fish. The fish ponds will be stocked with Tilapia. An expensive fish in most shops, priced at 150 Thai Baht per kilo ($4), is out of reach for many since 300 Thai Baht ($7) is a day's wage if you are lucky enough to find work on a farm assisting with rice planting or harvesting.
As stated, the land is barren and needs to be prepared for planting. This will entail plowing, and the flat land needs to be divided into one rye sunken paddy field to hold water to an approximate depth of 2 feet. That is a lot of soil to move, but the dredged soil will make the bank walkways between the separated fields.
When ready, the fields will be sown with sticky rice, giving the people we are helping employment opportunities even though it will be at the introductory pay rates.
The rice harvest will yield approximately 13 tonnes. Eight tonnes will be sold to the local vendors to raise funds for the next season's seeding and preparation. The other five tonnes will be distributed to the poorest families to give them a year's supply of rice free of charge—similarly, the fish. The estimated fish production over the season will be around 20,000 1-kilo fish per year.
At the end of the first year, we should be fully self-sufficient enough to continue our work as we started for the following years.
Our ultimate aim will be to position fully self-contained/self-efficient accommodation around the pond areas on the site. This accommodation will be used primarily to house the workers during harvest and sowing seasons and will be made available to paying guests who wish to come and fish for a few days' break in between.
All proceeds generated will be used to continue fish production. Ultimately, this nonprofit scheme enhances the lives of the poorest people by providing food for the year and employment during the harvest and planting seasons. This is a win-win situation for all concerned in a very rural area.
