Aim: Beck's new moustache causes friction in the pool and with his coach. Comedy/Drama Short Film.
Young swimmer Beck’s new moustache makes waves when it slows him down in the pool shortly before a big race. As his coach grows more aggressive in his attempts to make him shave, Beck must choose between his moustache and freedom, or his coach and treading water.
Whiplash (2014) meets Wes Anderson at the local leisure centre in A Hair’s Breadth. A comedic drama from writer/director Kieran Wall (Royal Television Society nominated, Baile (2021)). The film follows a tit-for-tat conflict between two men who continually fail to communicate with frank conversation, eventually resorting to violence.
Beck and Coach must come to understand each other, and recognise that they’re not actually fighting over a moustache.
Light-hearted with an off-beat humour, the film will take cues from the short film Shuttlecock (2020). Comedy will be found in the hubristic seriousness with which the characters take themselves.
Performance will lean towards melodrama and mild slapstick reminiscent of Chas and Eli’s fight in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). Nevertheless, the audience will still find truth in the characters. Their actions are ridiculous, but they are sincere in their ambitions.
The cinematography will be designed for comedic effect by drawing attention to itself and juxtaposing the ‘small-town’ nature of the leisure centre with the characters’ grand ideas about its importance.
Opening with a visual grammar that utilises dramatic zooms and dollies will create this effect, before the steady, deliberative camera is displaced by something more handheld and chaotic as Beck and Coach's relationship frays. Their division will also be expressed through the distorting effect of shooting through the water.
Since graduating from film school, we’ve worked in various junior roles in the industry and filled our CVs with some great credits. But with little time to work on our own projects, we long to be back in the creative driving seat. This film is born out of a desire to get back behind the camera and re-capture the fun of making a film with a talented group of collaborators and friends.
In this way, Beck's story is a reflection of our experiences post-film school.
Our attached HoDs come from female, working class, LGBTQIA+ and UK regional backgrounds, bringing with them a range of experience and perspectives that will enrich our film and help it reach a broader audience. We hope to make a film that entertains with its humour while striking at a familiar struggle to maintain one's passion in the face of other pressures.
This project is an ambitious step up that will teach us how to make a short film independently, presenting new challenges and lessons that we will take forward onto future projects. By contributing to our film, you are supporting a group of young filmmakers of various disciplines to follow their dreams and giving us the opportunity to hone our skills.
Your contributions will be used to cover a variety of production expenses essential to our 3 day shoot in July. Our location is booked, costumes designed, casting is well under way and most importantly, we have our moustache-maker lined up!
Your support will allow us to cover location and cast fees, costume, prosthetics and prop costs, as well as crew expenses and catering to ensure everyone is well looked after and able to do their best work during the shoot.
This crowdfunder forms a part of a larger budget which will otherwise be made up of self-finance and in-kind support (eg. discounts on/loans of camera kit and other equipment which we've already secured).
We know that not everyone can offer financial support to our project. Every like, comment, follow and share on social media or by word of mouth provides a huge boost to our film and we are delighted to have your support in whatever form.
You can find us on Instagram, where you can stay up to date on the development of the production and get an insider’s look behind-the-scenes.
