Why our services are needed in Teesside:
Age UK’s 2018 report ‘Poverty in Later Life’ examines Material Deprivation noting that 9% of pensioners over 65 would not be able to replace their cooker if it broke down, 2% are not able to pay regular bills and 2% identified being unable to keep adequately warm, the most common reason cited was ‘No money for this’. In addition 20% stated they could not go out socially at least once a month and 37% could not take a holiday away from home due to ‘Health/Disability’.
The difference we make to local people:
Mr and Mrs W were referred to Age UK Teesside's welfare advisor who secured lower rate attendance allowance for Mr W, higher rate attendance allowance for Mrs W, a premium on their pension credit, severe disability allowance and a council tax reduction. Mr and Mrs W were backdated £2350 and receive an extra £1000 a month. This money has had a significant impact on Mr and Mrs W’s health, they have been able to replace the window in their living room, they can now afford to heat the house and eat well. Age UK have been supporting Mr and Mrs W for a number of months now, providing continuing support in regards to what their new benefits can be used for, and have noticed a significant improvement in the health of Mr W in particular. He now states he is able to sleep better, feed him and his wife, and feel warm and safe in his own home. His whole demeanour has changed since working with Age UK Teesside.
